Hunting Island Hike

posted Jan 7, 2012 6:57 AM by Tom Taylor

January is a hiking month, and this month LCU is heading to Hunting Island State Park near Beaufort.  We'll check out forgotten forts, obscure graveyards and wander the trails and beaches of Hunting Island State Park. Last time we did this it never got above 40 degrees! A chilly day to chill...

Meet in Beaufort at 8:30 for this trip.

Edisto II

posted Aug 8, 2011 7:51 AM by Tom Taylor

For the August trip LCU will be headed back to the Edisto River.  This time we will be doing the 8 mile "middle stretch" from Stokes Bridge Road down to Mars Old Field Landing.  This section is more remote than some, and features oxbows and exposed marl shelves with interesting fossils.

We will meet at Stokes Bridge access point at 8:30 on August 13.  Plan to be on the river most of the day.

Lake Marion and Geocaching

posted Jun 3, 2011 12:49 PM by Tom Taylor

This month we'll paddle out into Lake Marion. This will be a funky world of drowned cypress and open lake - with the prospect of taking out to swim along the way. There will also be several geocaches on the water that some of the GPS-equipped among us are hankering to conquer as well. No matter what - this is going to be a fun one.

The specifics:

Meet at the church at 7:00am or at Carolina King Landing at 8:30am. [There is a small fee to park at Carolina King - but it has a fully equipped store and facilities...]

May Trip - Fossil Hunting on Lady Island

posted May 9, 2011 5:27 AM by Tom Taylor

Second Saturday is almost here and once again we're off to Beaufort and Lady's Island for our annual Megaladon hunt! This fun sharks-tooth and fossil-filled day will net lots of cool stuff from the spoil piles off Brickyard Point - and maybe another elusive megaladon tooth! For two years now, we have found scads of awesome teeth and John even claims to have located giant megs - even though I swear I saw a price tag on one of them.

This is a great paddle - fairly close to home, within sight of the landing for anyone who wishes to make it a half-day [we know who has to get back home to do chores...*whip crack*] and an easy time. Bring water and sunscreen and a bag for carrying piles of prehistoric plunder.

Best time to be out there is on a falling tide. The biggest teeth are at the lowest point and this means between Noon and 1:30. So meet at the church at 9:00am or the landing on Brickyard Point at 10:00. John will be leading this one and he has pledged to find a 4" meg this year. Who's up for the challenge?
